Upton Bishop is a Herefordshire village about five miles west of Newent and three and a half miles north-east of Ross-on-Wye. As its name hints, the manor belonged to the Bishops of Hereford from Saxon times until the reign of Elizabeth I. St John the Baptist's Church, restored by George Gilbert Scott in 1862, has a square tower and a memorial bell to the hymn writer Frances Ridley Havergal.
