Privacy Policy

How we collect, use and look after personal information. Last updated 15 October 2026.

1. Who we are

Discover Newent (discovernewent.co.uk, including the Newent Town Tour) is run by GMT Solutions Limited, a company registered in England and Wales under company number 06163753, with its registered office at 32A Broad Street, Newent, Gloucestershire, GL18 1AJ.

GMT Solutions Limited is the “controller” of the personal information described in this policy, which means we decide how and why it is used. If you have any questions about this policy or your information, please contact us, call 01531 888256, or write to us at the address above.

2. Information we collect

When you contact us or send in a listing. If you use our contact or “add your business” forms, we collect what you enter, which may include your name, email address, phone number, business name, business address, category, website, opening hours and your message.

When you sign up for the weekly What’s On email. If you sign up, we collect your email address, when you signed up and confirmed, and when we last sent you the email. We send you a confirmation email first, and you are only added to the list once you click the link in it.

Business and organisation listings. The directory shows contact details for businesses, schools, clubs and other organisations, such as names, phone numbers, email addresses, websites, social media pages and addresses. Most of this is business information. Some of it may relate to individuals, for example a sole trader or a named head teacher. We collect it from details people send us and from information the business or organisation has already made public, such as its own website.

When you use the “Ask” search. We process the question you type in order to give you an answer, and we keep a record of the question (without anything that identifies you) as part of our directory usage statistics below. Please do not include personal or sensitive information in your questions.

Directory usage statistics. We count anonymous activity on the directory, such as which business listings are viewed, which phone, website, map, email and social media links are clicked, and what words are searched for. This uses no cookies and records no personal information about you (no name, IP address or device identifier). We use these totals to improve the site and to show businesses how often their listing is used.

Website analytics. If you accept analytics cookies, Google Analytics collects information about how you use the site, such as the pages you visit, roughly where you are, the type of device and browser you use, and how you arrived at the site. We do not use advertising cookies.

Technical information. Like most websites, our servers automatically record basic technical information such as your IP address, browser type and the time of your visit, to keep the site running securely.

3. The Town Tour and your location

If you start the walking tour and allow location access, your device’s location is used within your own browser to show where you are on the map and to open information about nearby buildings. Your location is not sent to us or stored by us. Your tour progress, such as which stops you have visited, is saved only in your browser on your own device. You can clear it by clearing your browser’s site data, and you can turn off location access at any time in your device or browser settings.

4. How we use information, and why we are allowed to

Under UK data protection law we must have a lawful reason for using personal information. We use it:

We do not sell personal information, and we do not use it for marketing unless you have asked us to. If you contact us through this site, we will not add you to a mailing list. Only people who sign up for the What’s On email themselves receive it.

5. Who we share information with

We use trusted service providers to run the site. They only use information on our instructions:

Some of these providers are based in, or may process information in, the United States or other countries outside the UK. Where that happens, we rely on the safeguards allowed under UK data protection law, such as the UK–US data bridge or approved contract terms.

We may also share information if the law requires it, or to protect our rights or the safety of others.

6. How long we keep information

7. Keeping information secure

We use appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect personal information, including encrypted connections (HTTPS) and restricted access to our systems and database. No method of sending or storing information online is completely secure, but we take reasonable care to protect what you give us.

8. Your rights

Under UK data protection law you have the right to:

To use any of these rights, please contact us or call 01531 888256. We will reply within one month. There is normally no charge.

9. Cookies

We only use Google Analytics cookies, and only if you accept them. They help us see how the site is used. We do not use advertising cookies. Our own directory usage statistics do not use cookies. The site also uses your browser’s local storage, for example to remember your cookie choice and your Town Tour progress. This stays on your device. You can change your cookie choice at any time using the “Cookie settings” link at the bottom of every page.

10. Children

Discover Newent is a general community website. Our forms are intended for adults and for businesses and organisations, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children through them.

11. Complaints

If you are unhappy with how we have used your information, please contact us first and we will try to put it right. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), the UK’s data protection regulator, at ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint or on 0303 123 1113.

12. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. The latest version will always be on this page, with the date it was last updated at the top. See also our Terms of use.
