May Hill is a landmark hill about three miles south-west of Newent, rising to 296 metres where Gloucestershire meets Herefordshire, with homes and farms scattered across its lower slopes. Its summit is crowned by pines first planted in 1887 for Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee and offers views towards Wales and the Severn. Much of the hill is National Trust land, and morris dancers greet the dawn there every May Day.

May Hill Village Hall at Gander's Green is the hub of the community on the hill's lower slopes, and neighbouring Clifford's Mesne has a village hall of its own. The open common at the top is popular with walkers all year round, especially for sunrise and sunset views.
